It’s more than meets the eye. That is, the Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Museum located at Birdsong Marina on the scenic Tennessee River’s beautiful Kentucky Lake. I was looking forward to the museum and to learn about pearls. But I did not know of all the things to do at mile marker 103.7 LDB. The Tennessee River Pearl Museum is tucked away inside the main building of the combination marina office, boat sales office, boating supply store, and pearl showroom. The large building houses all these, plus it has a small auditorium for showing an introductory video about the pearl farm. The owners, Bob Keast and his wife Janis, have operated the museum and marina since 1980. Bob Jr. originally moved to Birdsong when he was 10 back in 1961 with his Mother and Father, Lorrine and Bob Keast, Sr.

What guests of Birdsong Resort and Marina are saying:

I had not been to Birdsong since the early 70s when I was a kid. I never forgot about it. Mom & Dad & my brother & I used to camp for a week in the early spring & catch tons of big crappie. Mom got our school work for the week & we did our lessons in the evenings after fishing & supper. I lost my Dad to lung cancer this past march. I miss him a lot & how he loved to fish. While taking a 3 day trip to Memphis, we saw the sign for Birdsong & stopped off. A lot of it looks the same. What good times!!!

From February to June Birdsong Resort and Marina’s, a Tennessee resort nestled on the Tennessee River’s beautiful Kentucky Lake,  Crappie run starts.  There the crappie come into shallow water to spawn. Fishermen who visit our marina enjoy catching Crappie in 3 to 10 feet of water, close to brush piles, stumps, and tree tops, fishing with minnows.

Angling for Crappie is popular throughout much of North America. Methods vary, but among the most popular is called “Spider Rigging,” a method characterized by a fisherman in a boat with many long fishing rods pointing away from the angler at various angles like spokes from a wheel. Anglers who employ the Spider Rigging method may choose from among many popular baits. Some of the most popular are plastic jigs with lead jig heads, crankbaits or live minnows. Many anglers also chum or dump live bait into the water to attract the fish hoping the fish will bite their bait. Crappie are also regularly targeted and caught during the spawning period by fly fishermen, and can be taken from frozen ponds and lakes in winter by ice fishing.
